Artistic development is rarely separated from material experimentation. Paste newspaper scraps on a painting to create a mixed media work. Take the canvas out of the frame and hang it on the wall to become a sculptural piece. Gather objects from what’s near and available to create an installation or assemblage. These artists embrace practices that blur lines between painting and sculpture, two and three-dimensional works. Beneath the Layers presents six artists from Indonesia and Korea who delve deeper to the physical ways of making with paint, canvas, paper, and found objects. We invite viewers to investigate and imagine the stories that lie beneath each layer.
