ABOUT

SUANJAYA KENCUT: POP FRACTAL

A question often arises: “Where is the spirit of the Balinese taksu?”

Suanjaya Kencut’s practice has undergone a sublimation process and through abstractive patterns of Balinese values. Traditional ornamental carvings, repeated patterns of decorative fabric in ceremonies, Barong-Rangda performances, as well as the complex colors and structure of the stacked bantenan are the cultures rooted in the artist. Combining with his knowledge of modern art, he presented them through repetition of motifs, “overlapping” composition of doll figures, contrasting colors, and the dynamics of enlarging the subject matter in the frame of his canvases.

The repetitive visual patterns underscore the cycle of life and social realities that keep repeating themselves: accumulating but seems separated and unconnected. It describes the social and emotional phenomena faced by contemporary society as “a world where identity often feels fragmented, emotions are difficult to be expressed fully, and social interactions are filled with ‘pseudo’ symbolism that reflects a fragmented reality.” Kencut’s metaphor invites viewers to reflect on the condition of modern humans and seek a deeper understanding of their own identity and emotions in a complex social context.
