Korea as seen through the eyes of photographer Han Youngsoo is a place of resilience. For Han, the mandate of photography was democratic – to depict the quotidian difficulties and joys of everyday life. Han was a veteran of the Korean War, and his photographs of women depict their leading role in the building of post-war South Korea. Men were scarce after the war, so women took charge of both business and household affairs. Han saw the future of the nation in these women who went on living and raising families in the aftermath of total devastation and loss.
사진작가 한영수(1933-1999)의 독창적인 예술세계를 만끽할 수 있는 <When The Spring Wind Blows>전이 백아트 서울에서 개최된다. ‘1956-63년대 한국 여성’사진 가운데 선별된 작품 30여 점으로 구성된 이번 전시는 한영수문화재단과 백아트가 공동주최한다. 한영수 작 가의 사진작업은 동시대 활동했던 리얼리즘 사진작가들과는 다른 감성의 사진이다. 그는 시 대를 아우르는 ‘모던하고 세련된 순간들’, 그리고 그것을 지탱하는 ‘생의 열정’을 사진으로 담 아내는 놀라운 감각을 지닌 사진가였다.
Han Youngsoo was a member of the Shinsunwhue group of photographers, whose first exhibition in 1957 declared them saenghwalchuŭi sajin or “everyday life” photographers. In Seoul, they documented the resurrection of a city destroyed. Attention came to the Shinsunwhue group by way of the Edward Steichen-curated traveling exhibition, The Family of Man, which traveled from MoMA in New York to the Kyongbok Palace Museum in Seoul in 1957, among dozens of global venues. These two events coincided to introduce South Korea to photography as an art form for the first time. Han’s vision of postwar Korea has since become definitive.
한영수 작가는 피사체인 인물들의 어떤 행동이나 행위에 개입하지 않는다. 그저 그들의 주변 에서 일상에서 살아 움직이는 인물 가운데서도 여성들의 몸짓이나 표정을 관찰한다. 멀찍이 서 무심하게 조용히 기다린다. 그리고 무심코 드러나는 어떤 뒷모습이나 무심한 표정으로 어 떤 생각에 사로잡힌 인물의 표정 속에서 ‘어떤 빛나는 순간’을 포착하는 순간, 낚아채듯 그것 을 사진으로 담아낸다. ‘무의식적 순간‘을 포착하는 것이다. 그것은 세련된 옷차림으로 자신감 에 찬 발걸음으로 거리를 걷고, 까페에서 신문을 읽고, 우산을 쓰고 누군가를 기다리고, 현대 적인 수영복을 입고 한강에서 여름휴가를 즐기는 여성들의 평범한 일상 속에서 순간순간 반 짝이는 ’생의 활기‘ 그 자체이다. 한영수 작가는 이렇게 찰라의 빛남을 독창적이면서도 탁월 한 앵글로 담아낸다. 오직 ‘사진가 한영수’만이 창조할 수 있는 세련된 감각이 이렇게 작품으 로 완성된다. 그는 남녀의 사랑이나 이별의 서사가 자아내는 극적인 순간 없이도, 이토록 모 던하고 낭만적인 사진이 될 수 있다는 사실을 잘 보여준다.
Han often photographed women at work, quietly refuting popular images of Korean women as passive and long-suffering that had proliferated under Japanese occupation. While poor, the women in Han’s images are empowered, strong, and capable. They simultaneously carry children and loads to market, going about their business without interference from Han’s camera. Han’s realist technique, gleaned from the study of artists like Steichen and Henri Cartier-Bresson, captures the life of the street as it unfolds. Through composition and perspective, Han creates narratives contrasting tradition with modernity, interdependence with independence.
어떠한 혹독한 시련 속에서도 “사람들은 살아간다”. 한영수 작가는 전후 폐허가 되어버린 도 시에서 살아가는 다양한 여성들의 일상 속에서 ‘삶’의 놀라우리만치 아름답고, 찬란한 순간을 발견했다. 그 누구에게도 주눅들지 않고, 자신의 시대를 당차게 살아온 이들을 사진으로 담아 낸 사진작가 한영수의 탁월한 감각과 천재성은 70년의 시간을 무색하게 만든다. 과거와 현재 가 오버랩되는 몽환적이면서도 생생한 순간을 포착한 한영수 작가의 사진작품들을 백아트에 서 만나보길 바란다.
한영수 작가는 한국 사진가로서는 처음으로 2017년 뉴욕 국제사진센터(ICP, International Center of Photography)에서 개인전을 개최했고, 2019년에는 하버드 대학 아시아센터에서 전을, 2021년 11월 국립현대미술관(덕수 궁) 박수근 <봄을 기다리는 나목>전, 2022년 9월 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA)에서 개최된 <사이의 공간, 한국미술의 근대 The Space Between : The Modern in Korean Art>전과 같은 대규모 국제전시에 연이어 참여하면서, 세계적인 주목을 받고 있다. 현재 그 의 작품들은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 서울역사박물관, 국립민속박물관, 대한민국역사 박물관, LA카운티미술관(LACMA), 뉴욕국제사진센터(ICP), 헝가리 사진박물관에 소장되어 있 다.
