한영수(1933–1999)는 전후 서울이 근대적 도시문화로 변화해 가는 과정과 그 속에서 살아가는 사람들의 삶을 독창적인 시각언어로 기록한 대한민국의 사진가이자, 한국 광고사진과 상업사진의 1세대를 대표하는 사진가입니다. 그의 사진은 변화하는 도시 공간과 그 안에서 형성된 새로운 생활문화, 소비문화, 여가문화, 그리고 평범한 사람들의 일상을 섬세하게 담아내며 전후 서울의 시대상을 보여줍니다.

1950년대 후반 한영수는 한국 최초의 리얼리즘 사진단체인 신선회의 초기 멤버로 활동하며 본격적인 작품활동을 시작했습니다. 회화주의적 사진에서 벗어나 현실과 일상을 기록하고자 했던 신선회의 활동은 그의사진 세계 형성에 중요한 기반이 되었으며, 그는 거리와 시장, 카페와 백화점, 공원과 대중교통, 그리고 변화하는 여성들의 모습을 통해 전후 서울의 새로운 도시문화를 자신만의 시선으로 기록했습니다.

1966년에는 상업사진 스튜디오 한영수사진연구소를 설립하여 광고와 패션 사진 분야에서 활발히 활동했으며, 개인 작업과 상업사진을 병행하며 한국 광고사진의 발전에도 중요한 역할을 했습니다.

2000년대 이후 그의 1950~60년대 초기 사진은 국내외에서 다시 주목받고 있습니다. 한영수의 딸 한선정이설립한 한영수문화재단은 사진집 출판, 전시, 작품 연구와 아카이브 구축 등 다양한 활동을 통해 그의 작품세계를 지속적으로 소개하고 있으며, 오늘날 그의 작품은 전후 서울의 도시문화와 한국 현대사진의 형성을이해하는 중요한 기록으로 평가받고 있습니다. 현재 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관(MMCA), 국제사진센터(ICP, 뉴욕), 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA) 등 국내외 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있습니다.

Han Youngsoo (1933–1999) was a South Korean photographer who documented the transformation of postwar Seoul into a modern city through a distinctive visual language. A pioneer of Korean commercial and advertising photography, he captured the changing urban landscape and the everyday lives of its people, revealing the emergence of new urban culture and modern lifestyles.

In the late 1950s, Han became an early member of Shinsunghoe, Korea’s first photographic group to advocate realism. Rejecting the pictorialist tradition of the time, he developed his own visual language by recording the changing city of Seoul through its streets, markets, cafés, department stores, parks, public transportation, and the people who inhabited them.

In 1966, Han founded Han’s Photo, establishing a successful career in advertising and fashion photography while continuing his personal practice. Through this dual career, he became one of the leading figures in Korean commercial photography.

Since the 2000s, Han’s photographs from the 1950s and 1960s have received renewed attention both in Korea and internationally. Founded by Han’s daughter, Han Sunjung, the Han Youngsoo Foundation has played a central role in preserving and promoting his legacy through publications, exhibitions, scholarly research, and the development of his archive. Today, Han’s work is recognized as an important record of postwar Seoul and the development of modern Korean photography, and is held in the collections of major institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), the International Center of Photography (ICP), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
