ABOUT
Chu Mirim (b.1982, Seoul, South Korea) utilizes pixel and grid as core visual languages to generate new methods of communication that transcend the boundaries between analog and digital. The juxtaposition of the two evokes a sense of nostalgia amidst the rapid transformations of modern society. The pixel, a foundational unit of digital imagery, serves as both a nostalgic reference to the early days of the web in the late 20th century and a reflection of the hyper-digitalized context of contemporary life. In a world shaped by data and technology, Chu’s work critically engages with the visual and structural patterns of this data-driven reality.
한국어: 추미림(b.1982, 서울)은 픽셀과 그리드 조형언어로 삼아 웹과 도시를 작업 주제로 탐구하며, 디지털과 아날로그의 경계에서 새로운 소통 방식을 제안한다. 웹이 처음 개발된 1980-90년대 이후 급속도로 발전한 오늘날, 디지털과 픽셀은 작가의 일상적 환경의 중심이자 어린 시절의 노스텔지어를 자극하는 매개체로 자리잡았다. 데이터와 기술이 일상에 깊숙이 침투한 현대 사회에서, 작가는 데이터 중심 사회가 드러내는 양태와 본질을 환기하는 작업을 지속한다. 작가는 디지털 환경의 웹과 물리적 환경의 도시를 동시대 공존하는 환경으로 인식한다. 이에 따라, 디지털 화면의 기본 단위인 픽셀과 위성지도로 본 도시 구조에서 추출한 기하학적 도형을 조합하거나 반복하여 컴퓨터 프로그래밍(코딩)을 통해 실험적인 변화를 꾀한다. 이 과정에서 웹과 도시라는 두 환경의 조형적 패턴에서 발견되는 유사성과 차이는 새로운 데이터 이미지로 이차 생성되며, 작가는 이를 선별하고 변주하여 회화와 영상, 사진, 미디어 등 작품으로 재구성한다. 이러한 일련의 과정을 통해 작가는 디지털과 아날로그 간의 이중적 소통을 매개한다.
