ABOUT
Baik Art is pleased to announce participation in Art SG 2025.
Mella Jaarsma is a Dutch artist who is based in Indonesia, whose practice focuses on “forms of cultural and racial diversity embedded within clothing, the body and food”. For her solo presentation at Art SG, Baik Art will present notable works by Mella, including Pribumi-Pribumi (1998) performance video, where the artist invited her foreigner friends who live in Yogyakarta to fry frog legs, a Chinese delicacy, and serve them to the locals, where the cuisine is considered haram for Muslims, during sensitive times (referring to Indonesia’s May 1998 riot). Surat Terakhir/Last Letter (2014) inspired by the post office as the sole international communication agent during the colonial time. Before the development of telecommunication devices, messages were transmitted with mails and postcards. The post stamps as time badges and the handwriting that bears the writer’s feelings may fade throughout generations.
Surat Terakhir/Last Letter will be performed at the following time:
- – Thursday, 16 January 2025, 16.30-17.30
- – Saturday, 18 January 2025, 16.30-17.30
