Artist Statement: The Unidentified Bright Objects (UBO) series is an ongoing body of work dedicated to exploring sound in sites of protest. The maracas began pragmatically, as an easy and portable way for me to add noise and clatter to the marches and rallies I was attending. The series continues to evolve, as I explore slogans, politics, and form, echoing what’s happening in my own life and in the world around me. Simultaneous to this series, I have been working as a community organizer around issues of Anti-Racism in my small hometown of South Pasadena.
UBO (Unidentified Bright Objects, 미확인 밝은 물체) 시리즈는 시위 현장에서 소리를 탐색하는데 전념하는 작업입니다. 마라카스(손에 들고 흔들어 소리를 내는 악기)는 제가 참석하는 행진과 집회에서 소음을 더하고 달그락거릴 수 있는 실용적이면서도 쉽게 휴대 가능한 매체 입니다. UBO시리즈는 제가 슬로건, 정치, 형식을 탐구하고 저의 삶과 제 주변 세계에서 일어나고 있는 일을 반영하며 계속해서 진화되고 있습니다. 이 시리즈를 진행함과 동시에 제 고향, South Pasaden에서 반인종주의 문제에 대한 커뮤니티 조직위원으로 일하고 있습니다.
UBOs is a medical term describing small white spots found on the MRI’s of some people’s brains, including my own. No one knows exactly what UBOs are, but I’d like to imagine that they are reverberations of resistance in one’s interior self.
UBO는 사람들의 뇌를 찍은 MRI에서 발견되는 작은 흰색 반점을 설명하는 의학 용어입니다. UBO가 무엇인지 정확히 아는 사람은 없습니다. 하지만 그것이 사람 내면의 저항의 반향이라고 상상하고 싶습니다.
The blame-game rattle series points to, literally and figuratively, the cultural dynamics of responsibility, condemnation, and censure; forces which have recently brought great restoration as well as deep pain to our society. The form of these works, with fingers directed away and towards the person holding the instrument, highlights how the act of blame involves the one criticizing just as much as the one being judged. As I was creating the blame-game rattles my attitudes changed, from perceiving blame as purely negative, to thinking about accountability in a more generative light. The shapes of the rattles reflect this shift. For instance, one of the rattles has women’s fingers united in one direction, showing the strength of solidarity we have seen in such movements as #metoo, #timesup and #blacklivesmatter.
비난-게임-딸랑이 시리즈는 말 그대로 그리고 비유적으로 책임, 비난, 비난의 문화적 역동성을 지적하는데, 이것은 최근 우리 사회에 큰 회복과 깊은 고통을 가져다 준 힘입니다. 이러한 작품들의 형태는 악기(딸랑이)를 들고 있는 사람을 향해 손가락이 향하게 되는데, 어떻게 비난 받는 사람이 심판 받는 사람만큼이나 비난 받는 행동을 하는지를 강조합니다. 저는 비난 게임 시리즈를 만들면서 비난을 순전히 부정적인 것으로 인식하는 것에서 보다 생산적인 관점에서 책임에 대해 생각하는 것으로 바뀌었습니다. 딸랑이 모양은 이러한 변화를 반영합니다. 예를 들어 딸랑이 중 하나는 여성의 손가락이 한 방향으로 뭉쳐서 #metoo, #timesup 및 #blacklivesmatter와 같은 동작에서 본 결속력의 힘을 보여줍니다.
The UBO and blame-game rattles series both add different sounds (percussive and vibratory) to my broader series of sculptural instruments. They take focus away from the voice to produce and perform and allow other noises to resound and rumble.
