ABOUT
Atreyu Moniaga is an Indonesian artist based in Jakarta. He graduated with a degree in Communications and Visual Design from the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ) and started his career in the creative scene as a freelance illustrator and photographer before fully immersing himself as a fine artist. His works are influenced by dark fantasies with a tinge of surrealism, in which he combines visual symbolisms as a way to communicate his most private thoughts, feelings, and desires. Although he takes inspiration from somber sentients, his works are characterized by a whimsical universe filled with beautiful ornamental details. Working primarily in painting and drawing, Atreyu has recently explored sculpting and remains open to cross-disciplinary collaborations.
자카르타를 거점으로 활발하게 창작활동을 이어가는 아트레이유 모니아가(Atreyu Moniaga, b.1988)는 인도네시아에서 주목받는 젊은 예술가이다. 자카르타 예술대학(IKJ)에서 커뮤니케이션과 시 각 디자인을 전공하고 프리랜서 삽화가와 사진작가로 창작활동을 시작한 그는 점차 초현실주의적인 색 채가 강한 독창적인 화면구성을 바탕으로 한 작품들을 그려내며 회화작가로 전향했다. 2015년 Rise of the Elephants drawing competition(Kreavi and Frank&Co)에서 우승을 차지한 그는 2020년 미국 오레곤의 Gallery Nucleus Portland 그룹전에 참여했고, 2년 후 인도네시아 코헤시 이니셔티브 에서 열린 세 번째 개인전 으로 미술계의 주목을 받았다.
<2022 프리뷰 성수>에서 선보이는 8장의 수채화로 구성된 새로운 시리즈를 위해 아트레이유는 자신 의 작품이나 우주 속에 있는 가공의 이야기와 캐릭터를 그린 일기장을 다시 펼쳐, 자신의 이야기와 마 주했다. 아트레이유의 작품에는 복잡하고 기이한 상징과 기호들이 가득한 환상적인 우주가 담겨있다. 영웅주의와 비극, 희망과 광기에 대한 개념을 탐구하고 그 사색의 결과를 독특한 매체, 구성, 색채를 이용해 상징적 언어로 만들어내는 작업방식은 아트레이유만의 이국적인 색채를 더욱 짙게 만들어낸다.
전체적으로 우울한 정서가 지배적인 아트레이유의 작품에는 슬픔과 절망, 고뇌와 같은 부정적 감정들 을 주된 소재로 사용되기 때문에, 어두운 환상을 자극하는 장면들로 가득 채워진다. 그러나 아트레이 유는 관람객들이 작품을 통해 자신의 어두운 면에 마주할 희망과 자기 수용의 원천을 발견하기를 원 한다. 복잡하고 끊임없이 이어지는 생명체들의 기괴한 움직임과 색채가 주는 매혹 속에 밝은 희망이 공존하는 이유이다.
